LA SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT VETERAN CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION INTO ALEX VILLANUEVA'S USE OF PUBLIC RESOURCES TO INVESTIGATE POLITICAL FOES

"The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is not Alex Villanueva's slush fund to build himself a private helicopter pad. It's not his propaganda machine to politicize the very serious issue of homelessness. Nor is it a private investigative tool to intimidate and harass his political foes. This is a misuse of taxpayer resources that the District Attorney, Attorney General and United States Attorney should investigate.

Alex Villanueva has forgotten that he is in the business of public service.  Los Angeles County needs a Sheriff that puts public's interest ahead of self-interest."

LONGTIME DEPARTMENT VETERAN ERIC STRONG LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR LA COUNTY SHERIFF
Following renewed revelations of Deputy Gangs in the LA Sheriff’s Department, longtime department veteran launches campaign to be LA County’s 34th Sheriff

LOS ANGELES–Today, Lieutenant Eric Strong, a nearly 30-year veteran of law enforcement, launched his campaign for LA County Sheriff.  The announcement came on the heels of renewed revelations of Deputy Gangs in the department.

“The leadership of this department is unwilling to even acknowledge the existence of gangs in our ranks, and that has left the community’s trust in the Sheriff’s Department in tatters,” said Lt. Strong. “As LA County Sheriff my mission will be to enhance safety, protect victims of crime, and rid the Department of a culture that has allowed deputy gangs to fester. The public is less likely to report crimes to officers they do not trust, a dangerous dynamic as violence is on the rise, and a reality that makes the job of law enforcement more dangerous. We can, and we will, make this a world-class department that Los Angeles can trust and be proud of.”

Over his nearly 30-years in law enforcement, Eric Strong has led units across virtually every function of the LA County Sheriff’s Department, from patrol to courts, custody, investigations, internal affairs, risk management and auditing.  He began working patrol for the Compton Police Department in 1993, later taking assignments with SWAT and Metro before the department was absorbed by the LA County Sheriff’s Department.  He has overseen some of the department’s most high-profile internal affairs investigations, taught use of force, stopped attempted conspiracies in the LA County jail during the FBI’s Anthony Brown investigation at men’s central jail, and has extensive experience getting bad officers off the streets.

Lt. Strong was surrounded by his friends and family as he made the announcement today. He was born and raised in LA in the city of Carson, and went to college at the University of California at Los Angeles.  His dad was a Compton Police Officer and Lt. Strong is a veteran of the Marine Corps.  He is also a board member of Police Against Racism and a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy at Quantico.  He met his wife, Sidra Sherrod-Strong, while working in the department.  They have three children ages 23, 22 and 21.

A live stream of his announcement is available by here.
